Description
Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple stands on the western bank of the sacred river Ganga in Varanasi. As one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, it is regarded as the ultimate center of spiritual energy in Hinduism.
Religious Significance
It is believed that Varanasi is the place where the first Jyotirlinga manifested as a pillar of infinite light. Worshiping Lord Shiva here bestows Moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth).
History
The temple has been mentioned in ancient Puranas, including the Kashi Khanda of Skanda Purana. Rebuilt several times throughout history, the current structure was erected by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780. Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab donated 1 ton of pure gold to plate the temple spires in 1835.
Legends & Secrets
According to legend, Lord Shiva himself resides in Kashi and recites the Tarak Mantra in the ears of anyone passing away here to grant them instant salvation.
